While climbing the stairway, view the hall tree containing Henry's cane and top hat he carried and wore to Lincoln's funeral. The tree was purchased circa 1850 in Cincinnati by Mrs. Lane. This cane belonged to Lane and was used at the Republican Convention in Chicago. Lane was so excited when Lincoln secured the nomination that he jumped up on a table and danced a little jig, holding this cane in the air. A cartoon depicted this event in Harper's Weekly.
A cabinet in the upper hall holds pieces collected by Mrs. Lane.
Once upstairs in the upper hall, see the balcony where Joanna and ladies of the county presented a flag to Henry and his volunteers as they left for the Mexican War in 1846.
Other items of interest:
Two large etchings. Hanging in stairwell. They are of Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie. Purchased by the Lanes in France. Joanna's brother was presented at this court.
