The north balcony overlooks a large grove or pasture area that included to the north Major Isaac Elston’s (Joanna’s father) 1835 home (originally facing north) which now belongs to Wabash College. Also note to the east the Isaac Elston II, 1882 home (now the DAR Memorial Elston House). In this area (and part of the former family grove) were the Wallace home (destroyed by fire), the Lew Wallace Study, the Blair home (corner of Wallace and Wabash), the family cemetery and various other buildings. This balcony also overlooks the Speed Cabin.
Few of the trees you see today were here when Lane Place was built in 1845 — basically in the middle of Isaac Elston’s pasture where he grazed sheep. These present day trees, all native to Indiana, were planted by Henry Lane in the late 1870s.
